Step 3 of 8

Your housing

To calculate your support with housing costs, we need the details about your living situation - what you pay and any other people who live with you besides those we already know.

Which best describes your housing situation?

This should describe your main housing situation and not any additional properties you might have.

Private rent
Social housing
Homeowner
Shared ownership
Living rent-free or with parents
Supported accommodation
Temporary accommodation
Boarder or lodger
Homeless
How to answer

Choose the option that best matches your current housing situation:

  • Private rent - You rent from a private landlord and have an Assured Shorthold Tenancy.
  • Social housing - You rent from a social landlord and have a Secure Tenancy from a local council, a housing association, or Northern Ireland Housing Executive.
  • Homeowner - You own your home entirely or have a mortgage on it.
  • Shared ownership - You own a part of your home and pay rent on the remaining part.
  • Living rent-free or living with parents - You don't pay rent, or you pay rent to a parent or other close relative (rent to close family isn't counted for housing help).
  • Supported accommodation - Your landlord gives you care and support because you're vulnerable, or you have been receiving housing benefit since 1 January 1996 or before.
  • Temporary accommodation - You live in temporary housing.
  • Boarder or lodger - You rent a room in your landlord's house.
  • Homeless - To be legally homeless, you must either not have a secure place to live, or it's unreasonable for you to stay where you are.
